Hi Felix!

Felix of Glorioso Brothers Grocery (1020 E. Brady St.) shows some of the freshly made Italian sausages available at his store, including (from left) hot Italian, cheese and pepper, and mild.

Felix sees things heating up, with a steady increase in the number of customers opting for hot Italians, although mild still far outsells spicy.

His family's neighborhood grocery makes 800 pounds of sausage each week that includes an assortment of dried sausages such as wine-washed volpino and abbruzze, a smoked pepperoni-like sausage.

One of their most popular cured sausages is mortadella. Felix describes it as an Italian cousin to German bologna. In bologna, the "fat is ground" and in mortadella, the fat is "in chunks."

Greetings from San Diego!

I thought I was safe all these years and then you found me. Actually when in Milwaukee back in '02 or thereabouts, I had occasion to stop by Bill Johnson's school on the south side. After a very nice visit I headed up to 35th street and walked the halls I hadn't even seen in 30 years. The ghosts eagerly greeted me as I strode through like I owned the place.

I ended up in the gift shop and plunked down $20 or $30 on a swell MUHS sweatshirt that I was wearing last night, as it were. I saw no one that I knew, and as school was not in session, the halls were mainly deserted. It was a real jerk on the heart strings and the memory banks.

Yesterday I was doubly pleased when I got snailmail from Dick Groh AND an email from Mark Kelly with the link to the BGR blogspot. I was heartened to see so many of us aren't dead yet; and aging gracefully. Now that I have been found I will do my best to keep in touch hereupon.

Nan and I (yes, we've been together for 35+ years now) are headed out for a day sail off San Diego this afternoon. I have pics to post but will have to do that later.

Great to be here!! Even better to know so many of you are doing so well.

Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture. After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating if you're lucky! It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear.

In some 500 bars & clubs throughout the U.S., the center of attention these days is a monstrous new machine called Scopitone. It is a cross between a jukebox and TV.

For 25 cents a throw, Scopitone projects any one of 36 musical movies on a 26-inch screen, flooding the premises with delirious color and hi-fi scooby-ooby-doo for three whole minutes.

Scopitone, which has been the rage of France for the past four years, has spread from Marseilles to Macao. Nikita Khrushchev even has one loaded with Marxian uplift featurettes.

Actually, Scopitone's "musies" are descended from U.S. Soundies, which during World War II filled bus terminals and B-girl grottoes with grainy, black-and-white productions. Television and Lucky Strike's Hit Parade put a merciful end to Soundies, but it looks as if Scopitone will be here to stay awhile.

Time Magazine, notwithstanding, a great moment in the Scopitone era was that twilight zone between "Laugh In" and the invention of MTV. One of the legendary icons of pop culture, Bridget Bardot, tried to translate into French a certain: Elle ne sait quoi. Not a clue. The word was "camp." This definitely wasn't ... And yet ... History invites revision.

The Great Lakes Schooner, FleetWing, falls victim to Death's Door (1888).

Death's Door

The legends surrounding Death's Door portray grim scenes worthy of the passage's name. They tell of a huge Indian war party pummeled to death against its rocky shores. They recount the last voyages of innumerable wooden ships pulverized by swirling currents and howling winds. But like a fierce squall that blurs the line between sea and sky, the potent legacy of Death's Door obscures the line between fact and fancy.

Death's Door is the chief navigational passage between the Bay of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. It lies between the northeast end of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula and the rocky shores of Pilot, Plum, Detroit, and Washington islands.

It's where many of the shipwrecks are found in the waters of Lake Michican and described further at the web site: Wisconsin's Great Lakes Shipwrecks.

Nightmare Theatre

with "Dr. Cadaverino"

WITI-TV, which had first brought horror films to Milwaukee in 1958, debuted Nightmare Theater October 1964 with Dr. Cadaverino. The character was played by Jack DuBlon, the voice of Albert the Alley Cat and other puppets on "Cartoon Alley,” a children’s show shown early mornings.

DuBlon originally donned warts, boils, a crooked nose, and long rubber fingers. Through the years the makeup was dropped and Cadaverino added sunglasses and a bowler hat. His white cotton work gloves became a necessity after he reached into a fan's package one day and grabbed a handful of decomposing rat.

In the Doctor's world, everybody was "Stupid!" including his guests, and the actors and directors of the movies he showed on the program but in particular Igor, the Doctor's headless assistant who reaped such nicknames as "El Creepo" and "Dumbhead." The show's main attraction were the typical schlock horror classics like Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), The Unearthly (1957), and the mandatory Frankenstein, Wolfman, and Dracula movies.

The show ran through September 1977. DuBlon tired of the show and the difficulty doing the voice and ended its 13 year run. He left the station in 1985 and passed away of pancreatic and liver cancer in 1988. Jack DuBlon's biography.

Houdini, who grew up in Appleton as Ehrich Weiss, died on Halloween, 1926.

For years, it has been assumed that a blow to his abdomen from an overzealous college student killed him.

Houdini was known for his tremendous physical condition, and could withstand blows to the abdomen by tensing his muscles.

While performing in Canada, however, he was challenged by a student who didn't give him time to prepare for the punch. Whether or not the blow ruptured his appendix, it did not cause the peritonitis that had already infected him with acute appendicitis. Houdini died at age 52.

For the following ten years Bess, his wife, began a tradition of holding a séance on Halloween to see whether Houdini, "The Man No Jail Could Hold," could escape from death. Their previously agreed upon code spelled out the word "BELIEVE."

Only now thanks to the medium of the web, can Houdini be heard to speak from the beyond. Click on the photo above. Chant the code. MAKE what you will. But who would dare say it's just...

Spencer Tracy played a priest in four films: San Francisco (1936), Boy's Town (1938), Men of Boy's Town (1941) and The Devil at Four O'Clock (1961). The part of the priest came naturally to Tracy since at the age of 16, while attending a Jesuit school in Milwaukee known then as Marquette Academy, he felt called to the priesthood.

"You know how it is in a place like that," he later told a close friend. "The influence is strong, very strong, intoxicating. The priests are all such superior men--heroes. You want to be like them--we all did. Every guy in the school probably thought some--more or less--about trying for the cloth. Civil War Event

October 1st and 2nd

In 1861 Wisconsin had been a state for only 13 years. With a total population of a little under 700,000, the state sent 91,200 men into the field in 53 infantry regiments, 4 cavalry regiments, a company of Berdan’s sharpshooters, 13 light artillery batteries and 1 unit of heavy artillery serving in both the East and the West.

Of the 91,200 who served, 11,000 were killed and a majority returned partially disabled due to wounds or disease.

On Oct. 1st and 2nd, historic Trimborn Farm will honor these patriots of Wiscsonin with a Civil War encampment featuring volunteers who will portray and describe life in a Civil War military camp.

Visitors can interact with participants as well as view the conditions of military life in the 1860s. Activities will include children's games, vintage baseball and cricket, period fashion shows, a firing demonstration, lectures, music, and drilling of recruits.

The cost is $3 for adults; $2 seniors and students. Children under six are free. Trimborn Farm is located at 8881 W. Grange Avenue in Greendale . For information, call 414-273-8288.

New Richmond June 12th, 1899
The worst tornado disaster in Wisconsin history, this storm virtually leveled New Richmond on the day the circus came to town.

Rock County November 11th, 1911
Part of a late season outbreak that produced at least nine significant tornadoes in the upper Midwest.

Lone Rock May 21st, 1918
A four day outbreak of severe weather across the Midwest produces 34 significant tornadoes and ends in Lone Rock.

Berlin April 3rd, 1956 F4
Part of a widespread severe weather outbreak that produced at least 33 significant tornadoes from Oklahoma to Michigan, killing 214 people. This tornado struck at 1:40 in the afternoon without warning.

Colfax/Dunn County June 4th, 1958
One of four intense tornadoes that race across northwest Wisconsin at over 50 miles per hour.

Lomira/Brownsville April 21st, 1974
Early spring storms race across eastern Wisconsin killing two and injuring dozens more. A rare photograph of this tornado is now posted!

Barneveld June 7th, 1984
A devastating tornado strikes in the middle of the night, part of a widespread severe weather outbreak that spawns over 40 tornadoes in the upper Midwest.

George Webb's

Big Day!

Starting in the 1940’s with the Brewer teams of the American Association, George Webb predicted Milwaukee's baseball team would win 12 straight games in newspaper ads like this one.

It was never promised that George Webb would give away free hamburgers for the lucky streak? But ... his advertised prediction and his customers' forbearance continued with the Milwaukee Braves and later with the major league Brewers.

On April 19, 1987, the Brewers won 12 straight games. To celebrate the historic event George Webb made good. His restaurants gave away 168,194 hamburghers topped with 2,868 pounds of onions and 367,180 slices of pickles.

At an average of 300 customers per hour at each location, 50 hamburgers were handed out every 10 minutes. It was worth the wait.

From the Diaries of Marquette (1675)

On Friday Sept 23 Marquette University will dedicate a new sculpture to honor its namesake. The bronze sculpture of Father Jacques Marquette will stand eight feet, two inches tall behind the Raynor Memorial Libarary.

The tradition of inspiring the men of Marquette started over 300 years ago. As a studious Jesuit two weeks shy of his 36th birthday, Fr. Marquette set out to explore the Upper Midwest and save souls.

His journeys sprouted the first white settlements in the interior of North America. He introduced Christianity into 600,000 square miles of wilderness. He gave French names to cities from New Orleans to LaCrosse, transformed Indian cultures and lifestyles from Minnesota to Missouri. His influence was so great it nearly exterminated the fur-bearing mammals in the region.

Writing about himself in the third person, Fr. Marquette described his first seminar in an Illinois village called Kaskasia, consisting of 74 cabins. Even then, his mission of unwitting chauvinism was aimed at the men in the audience.

"The audience was composed of 500 chiefs and elders," he wrote, "seated in a circle around the Father (as he called himself) and of all the young men, who remained standing. They numbered more than 1500 men," (then adding as if only an afterthought...) "without counting the women and children, who are always numerous."

His patriarchal focus survived for centuries, created great institutions and among some it remains earnest to this day.

Reggie Lisowski began his pro wrestling career in 1949 at the Paris Ballroom, located at 12th and Mitchell streets on Milwaukee's south side.

According to legend, he wrestled for several years by night while working stints as a brick-layer and factory worker by day. He trained by running up and down the Lake Michigan waterfront with a barrel of beer on each shoulder and dancing with Polish barmaids.

Lisowski, 79, still lives on Milwaukee's south side and now lifts weights with his grandsons. During his long career, which included appearances on occasional cards in the 1980s when he was in his 60s, Da Crusher held the AWA World singles title for three short reigns.

From "Meskousing" to Wisconsin

The state' name was first used by Europeans when Father Jacques Marquette entered it in his journal in June of 1673, during the voyage he made with fur-trader Louis Joliet across Wisconsin and down the Mississippi.

"The river on which we embarked is called Meskousing," wrote Marquette. "It is very wide; it has a sandy bottom, which forms various shoals that render its navigation very difficult."

After they returned, Joliet used the name "Miskonsing" on a map that he drew in 1674, and when the news of their voyage was first published in 1681 the book’s author, Melchisedec Thevenot, called it the "Mescousin" River.

The name we use today was born when the explorer Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de LaSalle, changed the initial M… to Oui… in a report written in 1682: "On the east one comes first to the river called by the Savages Ouisconsing, or Misconsing, which flows from the east."

Over the next two decades the initial M completely disappeared as writers and map-makers always called the river by some version of LaSalle's name. So for the next 150 years, the river, and by extension our part of the world generally, was known as "Ouisconsin."

As American soldiers and officials traveled through the area for the first time following the War of 1812, they initially used the French spelling. But when large numbers of lead miners streamed into the country south of the river in the 1820s, the U.S. government began to refer to it differently in debates and legislation. In 1836, when territorial status was authorized on July 4th, we became officially Wisconsin" (though Canadian and French writers often used "Ouisconsin" until the end of the 19th century).

Felix of Glorioso Brothers Grocery (1020 E. Brady St.) shows some of the freshly made Italian sausages available at his store, including (from left) hot Italian, cheese and pepper, and mild.

Felix sees things heating up, with a steady increase in the number of customers opting for hot Italians, although mild still far outsells spicy.

His family's neighborhood grocery makes 800 pounds of sausage each week that includes an assortment of dried sausages such as wine-washed volpino and abbruzze, a smoked pepperoni-like sausage.

One of their most popular cured sausages is mortadella. Felix describes it as an Italian cousin to German bologna. In bologna, the "fat is ground" and in mortadella, the fat is "in chunks."
